Autumn Celebration

I was looking back over some posts from last year on my devotional blog that I'm phasing out.  I found the following and thought I would share since it is the appropriate season.

Autumn Celebration

Gazing out the kitchen window, I watch the leaves swirl into the air as a gust of wind catches hold of them. The smell of autumn makes me long for a walk in the crisp cool air crunching through the leaves underfoot. This is my favorite season. Yet when I think about it, I realize it is a time of dying. The grass turns brown. The leaves change colors and fall from the trees leaving them bare and naked. The flowers shrivel with the cold no longer spreading the joy of their beauty around them. Fields lay barren with the stubble of harvest left behind.

Why do I love this season so much? Much of it is in the memories and traditions this time of year brings: Family seated around the dinner table on a cool evening enjoying a hot bowl of soup and warm laughter. Cupboards full of produce canned and lining the shelves in colorful rows. Hikes through the woods with hearts thrilling at the beauty of fall colors. Pumpkins being carved into friendly faces. Baked goods lining the counter top as the smell of bread and pie fills the house. It is all a celebration of work completed and a time of rest as winter closes in.

In I Peter 1:24, 25 it says, "All men are like grass, and their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of the Lord stands forever." Autumn is a reminder to us of the shortness of life. All things on earth will die. The celebration comes in when we realize that though the grass and flowers lie dormant and die, they will come back again in the spring. We too are living for this season on earth, but we will be brought back to life through the power of Christ's resurrection to live with Him eternally. How do we know this? It is through God's Word--the one thing that stands forever. It will never die because the one who spoke it is eternal. Perhaps God gave us this season to remind us of the one thing on earth that truly lasts.
