For the Love of God

"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever." I John 2:15-17
These are some convicting verses. John doesn't hesitate in getting right to the point. I was thinking about my life and ways that I might love the world. Are there things I crave that are not of God? Do I do things so I can boast about what I have done or what I have gained? These questions get to the heart of the matter. What is my motivation behind what I do each day?

I'm realizing that my becoming absorbed in my tasks around the home can show that I'm more devoted to things of earthly importance instead of heavenly importance. How many times have I put off holding a child, comforting a child, reading to a child, or talking to a child because I'm trying to get something done? There are times things have to get done, but many times it's something that can wait. Sometimes it's just a project of mine like redecorating a room that is more important than taking the time to teach my child about the love of the Father.

The most important job I have right now is to guide my children's hearts toward their Father in heaven. New paint on the walls, clutter being picked up, a room getting cleaned, or even a meal getting cooked on time pales in comparison. When I stand before Him on judgment day, I don't think God is going to ask me if my house looked like one from the Home and Garden Channel. The pride I take in accomplishing a task is only a temporary satisfaction here on earth. However, God does care about what I've done with the souls that he entrusted to me for ever so short a time.

"Lord, help me to prioritize my life and to put away the love of earthly things."
